The 2015 outlook for residential construction is very high. It is expected that at year’s end, residential construction will account for 40% of total construction nationwide. Open floor plans are certainly not new. However, as a new generation of younger homeowners begins to rise, an open floor plan seems to be what they desire. Open floor plans allow a better design concept and connect living spaces visually with similar décor and aesthetics. More natural light is available and reaches more of the home than more compartmentalized plans. While an open plan may not be for everyone, the industry is certainly seeing more and more desire for this type of layout.

In the past, Laundry duties were often closed off by walls and doors or hidden in a basement corner. Many cost prohibitive amenities in past years have dropped in price significantly, and the average new home is much more inclined to implement these wonders. Security camera systems, motion detectors, mobile charging stations and other similar electronic features are a hot ticket item in many homes being built this year.

Storage has always been an issue in homes and having a proper place for everything is becoming more important. Owners want their new home to have specialized storage right where it is needed to minimize clutter and improve the efficiency of their daily lives. Pantries in the kitchen and larger closets are two of the most common storage solutions people want.

Trend 5 – Outdoor Focus

The call of outdoor amenities is high this year as people desire to create comfortable spaces for living both inside and outside of their home. Patios and decks are again on the rise as part of a new home construction, as well as some features not as common in the past. These include outdoor showers or wash stations, built-in dining areas, and other means to make the backyard as inviting as the living room.
