Avoid DIY Disaster: When to Choose a Home Contractor over Doing It Yourself

/in Uncategorized

Do-it-yourself is a popular trend that has been growing thanks to the amount of information available on the internet, and the vast number of home improvement shows on television. While this is a great method that can save you money on many different things, when it comes to home remodeling or repair is it a wise choice? After all, the YouTube video or the home show host made it look easy. Whether you are very handy or the alternative, and whether the project is large and complex or relatively simple, you have a decision to make. Are you truly equipped to handle the project, or has overconfidence or a lack of knowledge about what is involved leading you to a home project nightmare? Is it possible that the amount of money you expect to save by going it alone pales in comparison to the cost involved if something goes wrong? More importantly, are you putting your health or even life in danger merely to save a few dollars? This article can help determine what projects you are capable of, and why most cases of home remodeling are better suited for the pros.

Making the Decision

In many cases, choosing a home contractor over doing it yourself would be a poor choice just on the basis of common sense. If you are hanging the family photos or installing a door-stop, calling for reinforcements is probably not a wise financial choice. On the other hand, many projects seem much less difficult than they are. There are many humorous examples online, of projects that may have been beyond the individual’s skillset. The first step in making a decision is to assess your abilities in relation to the project at hand honestly. Also, consider and plan for your extra expenses. You may be saving on labor costs, but if there is potential for mistakes, they can add up to far outweigh the benefit. Finally, think about the advantages and downfalls of each choice. If you have to spend weeks researching, purchasing or ordering materials, and providing the physical labor for a relatively simple project. You are probably better off letting go of your pride and saving the time and headache of DIY. Finally, make sure you understand building codes, local laws, and permit requirements in your area. If you feel you are in over your head, you probably are.

Benefits of Choosing a Contractor

First and foremost, if there is any risk of serious injury, unless you have the training to do it safely, do not attempt to complete the work. Typical examples of this would include wiring, roofing, mold or asbestos removal, working with natural gas, and removing walls, but there are many others. A contractor is not only licensed for such work; they have the training and skill to complete them as safely as possible, even if you think you have it under control. Other benefits include faster completion, fewer headaches due to less project management, higher quality work, better materials, no need to purchase specialized tools and equipment, and many more. Another consideration is that you never know what may be lurking behind those cabinets or above that ceiling. The unexpected can make a simple task into a monumental issue. It is best in these cases to be proactive instead of reactive.

It is true, there are many things you can do around your home to increase the value, enhance your comfort, and satisfy your desire to improve your home yourself. However, make sure the projects you take on are fully within your capabilities and avoid being the next internet DIY mishap sensation.
